My colleagues and I filled up two carts as much as we could, and we ended up with more than 400 pounds of books, including stacks for my room, the other teacher’s room, and the library. Needless to say, if you can possible go, you must! If you’re not sure if your district is signed up, check out The Teacher Store website, which   includes a list of school districts that are already signed up.   If your district is on the list, you can go, once per month, on the days your district listed for. The next day, I had two students bring my boxes of books to my room from the office, and then half the class volunteered to label the books for me and shelve them. As my volunteers unpacked the books, the class ooh’d and ahh’d over titles by Stephanie Meyer, James Patterson, Rick Riordan, and P.C. Cast + Kristen Cast. They were all definitely engaged! I ended up picking three students to reduce the chaos, and then let everyone have a chance to pick a book to read. You can see my volunteers here: Classroom Library Checkout After everyone had a chance to peruse the books available, they all had one question: Can we check these out? So far, I have told my students that I can’t check anything out because I don’t have a system setup. But not having a system kind of defeats the purpose of having a classroom library. So I did a quick search for possible applications that I can download to my phone and manage the checkouts (Because, if anything can be done, it’ll be done better if you use some technology, right?) I tried one app, and tested it with a student in fifth hour. It didn’t work. So I looked some more (while my students were drooling over my books and engaging in free voluntary  reading), and finally settled on Booksource’s Classroom Organizer. In order to get started, you need to sign up on the Booksource website. It’s completely free. First, you’ll create a classroom ID, which is what you’ll call your classroom library on the site. Mine is MrsWatersEnglish. Then you’ll setup a classroom password, which you can make available to students if you want them to sign into the site themselves and view your student page. I’m not going to use that functionality though. Next, you’ll setup a password for your teacher page, where you can enter your student profiles. Here’s the thing: If you’re an elementary teacher and you have 20 or 30 kids, I recommend just entering them manually. If you’re a secondary teacher though and have anywhere from 80 to 160 (or more) students, I recommend you download the Excel template and add your student details to it. Then upload the file to the Classroom Organizer website. Once all your students are in the system, you’re ready to download the iPhone or Android app on your phone. Available in the Android Market Available in the App Store After you’ve installed the version of the app you require, and sign in, you can start scanning your books. Yes, you read that right. The app uses your phone’s camera to scan the ISBN code of the book, and store it in the Booksource database for your convenience. When   a student is ready to checkout, just scan the book, select the student and then click the checkout button. When a student is ready to return a book, you just repeat the procedure, but click return. As soon as you’re done scanning, the Booksource website is updated with a list of books that are checked out and to whom. By the end of the day Friday, I had checked out 26 books. You can’t tell me that’s not effective! The continual increase of college tuition and student loans has made headlines in the news recently, mostly because of the alarming amount of student debt in the United States. According to the College Board, in 2010, students graduated from college owing an average of $25,250 in student loans; the highest amount ever. Needless to say that we are way pass this amount as of January 2016. As it stands, student debt is more than $1.2 Trillion dollars, higher than both credit card debt and auto loans. It is thus, not surprising that the issue of the cost of college education is at the forefront in this year’s presidential primaries. Democrat frontrunner Hillary Clinton is proposing a â€Å"debt-free tuition† and not wanting to be outdone, Bernie Sanders is offering â€Å"free tuition† for college students. If they are not being just being â€Å"politicians† and remain true to their words, then like Europe, college education in United States will be, for the mo st part free. The Existence of God and Evil The problem of evil has been around since the beginning. How could God allow such suffering of his â€Å"chosen people†? God is supposedly all loving (omni-benevolent) and all powerful (omnipotent) and yet He allows His creations to live in a world of danger and pain. Two philosophers this class has discussed pertaining to this problem is B.C. Johnson and John Hick. Johnson provides the theists’ defense of God and he argues them. These include free will, moral urgency, the laws of nature, and God’s â€Å"higher morality†. Hick examines two types of theodicies – the Augustinian position and the Irenaeus position. These positions also deal with free will, virtue (or moral urgency), and the laws of nature. Johnson†¦show more content†¦The laws of nature also attempt to defend God. A theist claims that the laws of nature creates evil, and it is irrational for God to intervene in every case of suffering and danger. If God did become involved, it would be impossible for anything to be predictable. In other words, nature and the cause and effect that people know would not be consistent or reliable. Johnson agrees that God’s involvement in every disaster would be wrong. As Johnson states, â€Å"To argue that continued miraculous intervention by God would be wrong is like insisting that one should never use salt because ingesting five pounds of it would be fatal† (Pojman 123). However, God should step in to stop or prevent the most horrific of disasters. Where is the line drawn, though? Johnson says it should be on the side of intervening more than not. Even if it is not known where to draw the line, no excuse should be made to not interfere in instances of pure evil. Thus, the laws of nature do not excuse the coexistence of God and evil. God’s â€Å"higher morality† is the last defense Johnson inspects. This morality is only followed by God and is what judges His actio ns. â€Å"Higher morality†, though, is unlike the morality on Earth. To allow evil, God’s morality would imply that what humans call good is evil, and what is evil in this world is good. Thus the two moralities are opposites. Research Contexts My theoretical framework is a synthesis of intersectionality theory and institutional ethnography. Intersectionality, vastly simplified, outlines the ways in which individuals’ multiple social positions are transformative rather than additive, and how those who are marginalized by class, race, gender and sexuality experience those structures in combination. Such research also seeks to challenge inequity (Nuà ±ez 2014). Multiple scholars have taken up this concept that comes out of black lesbian feminist thought and use it to understand how social structures create unique subject positions that are often characterized by simultaneous privileged and marginalized identities, now expanded to include categories such as disability as well as studies of privilege. Institutional ethnography considers institutional organization as it is constituted through the textual as well as constitutive of individual lived experience, emphasizing the discursive nature of organizational practices . The social construction of subjects by institutions (such as Smith College), found in its memos and bureaucratic measures, precedes and makes possible the interaction between the two (Smith 2002). Inequalities among groups of students, then, are reproduced and created by the college. The first three articles of the United States Constitution establish the three branches of the government. The first article is the legislative branch, the second the legislative branch, and the third is the judicial branch. Each is designed, so that no branch of government has too much power over the other branch. The branches generally need approval from one other branch to proceed with an item that is on their agenda. Without this balance one branch would have too much power in which would lop side the government on one side. The Article I creates the Legislative Branch which comprises the Congress of the United States. They will blame themselves or the divorce and will think they can get the parents back together if they behave. They will misbehave to get attention. They will act sick or experience true sickness in order to unite their parents. This stage is burdened with the responsibility of getting parents back together and will respond in ways to accomplish this mission . School aged children harbor fear of abandonment. The greatest effect on school aged children is not being able to see life past divorce. They are uncertain of the future and are confused about the roles to be played. This confusion will cause them o not want to participate at school and make up stories and act out Just to get attention. The combination of the change in parental separation, parenting style, and parental coping skills leads them to behave in unexpected and uncharacteristic ways . But usually its common characteristic is a high level of performance, capability, emotional appeal, style, etc. relative to its cost. This can also be expressed as maximizing the function of a product relative to its cost: Value = (Performance + Capability)/Cost = Function/Cost Value is not a matter of minimizing cost. In some cases the value of a product can be increased by increasing its function (performance or capability) and cost as long as the added function increases more than its added cost. The concept of functional worth can be important. Functional worth is the lowest cost to provide a given function. A function should be identified as to what is to be accomplished by a solution and not how it is to be accomplished. How the function is identified determines the scope, or range of solutions that can be considered. That functions designated as basic represent the operative function of the item or product and must be maintained and protected. Determining the basic function of single components can be relatively simple. By definition then, functions designated as basic will not change, but the way those functions are implemented is open to innovative speculation. As important as the basic function is to the success of any product, the cost to perform that function is inversely proportional to its importance. This is not an absolute rule, but rather an observation of the consumer products market. Few people purchase consumer products based on performance or the lowest cost of basic functions alone. When purchasing a product it is assumed that the basic function is operative. The customers attention is then directed to those visible secondary support functions, or product features, which determine the worth of the product. From a product design point of view, products that are perceived to have high value first address the basic functions performance and stress the achievement of all of the performance attributes. Once the basic functions are satisfied, the designers then address the secondary functions necessary to attract customers. Secondary functions are incorporated in the product as features to support and enhance the basic function and help sell the product. The elimination of secondary functions that are not very important to the customer will reduce product cost and increase value without detracting from the worth of the product. The cost contribution of the basic function does not, by itself, establish the value of the product. Few products are sold on the basis of their basic function alone. If this were so, the market for no name brands would be more popular than it is today. Although the cost contribution of the basic function is relatively small, its loss will cause the loss of the market value of the product. One objective of value analysis or function analysis, to improve value by reducing the cost-function relationship of a product, is achieved by eliminating or combining as many secondary functions as possible. VALUE ANALYSIS PROCESS The first step in the value analysis process is to define the problem and its scope. Once this is done, the functions of the product and its items are derived. These functions are classified into basic and secondary functions. A Cost Function Matrix or Value Analysis Matrix is prepared to identify the cost of providing each function by associating the function with a mechanism or component part of a product. Product functions with a high cost-function ratio are identified as opportunities for further investigation and improvement. Improvement opportunities are then brainstormed, analyzed, and selected. FUCTION COST MATRIX APPROACH: The objective of the Function Cost Matrix approach is to draw the attention of the analysts away from the cost of components and focus their attention on the cost contribution of the functions. The Function Cost Matrix displays the components of the product, and the cost of those components, along the left vertical side of the graph. The top horizontal legend contains the functions performed by those components. Each component is then examined to determine how many functions that component performs, and the cost contributions of those functions. With FAST, there is no right or wrong model or result. The problem should be structured until the product development team members are satisfied that the real problem is identified. After agreeing on the problem statement, the single most important output of the multi-disciplined team engaged in developing a FAST model is consensus. Since the team has been charged with the responsibility of resolving the assigned problem, it is their interpretation of the FAST model that reflects the problem statement thats important. The team members must discuss and reconfigure the FAST model until consensus is reached and all participating team members are satisfied that their concerns re expressed in the model. Once consensus has been achieved, the FAST model is complete and the team can move on to the next creative phase. A system exists because functions form dependency links with other functions, just as components form a dependency link with other components to make the system work. The importance of the FAST approach is that it graphically displays function dependencies and creates a process to study function links while exploring options to develop improved systems. There are normally two types of FAST diagrams, the technical FAST diagram and the customer FAST diagram. A technical FAST diagram is used to understand the technical aspects of a specific portion of a total product. A customer FAST diagram focuses on the aspects of a product that the customer cares about and does not delve into the technicalities, mechanics or physics of the product. A customer FAST diagram is usually applied to a total product. VALUE ADDED ASSESSMENT: The function of each design element is then reviewed against the operational definition of value to determine whether and how it contributes to the worth of the product or process. The value-added elements should also be appraised. For example, assume that our evaluation has determined that the function of a bolt is to attach-component. Our initial analysis reveals that this is a secondary function that supports the overall operation of our product and is therefore value-added. However, during the information-gathering phase of our analysis we discovered that several warranty claims can be traced to the failure of this bolt. Based upon this information we should then consider whether a substitute component might provide a higher level of value. In this situation we might consider a bigger, stronger bolt. If the revised design leads to fewer failures, our customers might experience fewer field failures. In addition, even though the new component presumably costs more than the original, we may find the overall product profitability improved if the reduced warranty claims offset the higher production costs. We might also choose to extend our analysis to consider other functionally equivalent components to the original bolt. Returning to our example, the function of the bolt was to attach-component. Several other design elements might perform the same fastening function at either a reduced cost or improved performance level. A more complete analysis might consider substituting a screw, a rivet, adhesive, or even a weld for the troublesome bolt. Each potential substitution has its own implications for production costs and stakeholder satisfaction. VALUE ANALYSIS AND DESIGN PROCESS The analysis of value is intrinsic to the design process. Design professionals evaluate materials and systems as part of the process of responding to the clients needs. The resultant design is really a series of recommendations to the client that address constructability, program requirements, and life-cycle costs including operational and maintenance expenses. Generating alternatives to produce the greatest worth for the client often takes skill sets beyond those of design professionals. A team approach can best incorporate the expertise of value and constructability consultants into any analysis that the designers of record provide. Used properly, value analysis can increase the return on investment and create greater overall project value for the client. Assessing Functional Alternatives The basis of value analysis is an organized effort focused on achieving the lowest life-cycle costs consistent with required performance, reliability, quality, and aesthetics. Usually, the best results are achieved when value analysis begins early in the design process. The first step in meeting that challenge is to make sure the client has a well-prepared budget and a clear program. Gaps in the clients program or insufficient funding can lead to significant problems during construction if not addressed up front. Value analysis should not be a one-time effort, however. The design team must review and evaluate each proposal on the basis of project goals, technical considerations, implementation consequences, and both initial operations and life-cycle cost savings.
